1. Alam nashrah laka sadrak
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ أَلَمْ نَشْرَحْ لَكَ صَدْرَكَ
Did We not expand for you, [O Muhammad], your breast?
The Consolation
1. Alam nashrah laka sadrak
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ أَلَمْ نَشْرَحْ لَكَ صَدْرَكَ
Did We not expand for you, [O Muhammad], your breast?
2. Wa wa d'ana 'anka wizrak
وَوَضَعْنَا عَنكَ وِزْرَكَ
And We removed from you your burden
3. Allazee anqada zahrak
ٱلَّذِىٓ أَنقَضَ ظَهْرَكَ
Which had weighed upon your back
4. Wa raf 'ana laka zikrak
وَرَفَعْنَا لَكَ ذِكْرَكَ
And raised high for you your repute.
5. Fa inna ma'al usri yusra
فَإِنَّ مَعَ ٱلْعُسْرِ يُسْرًا
For indeed, with hardship [will be] ease.
6. Inna ma'al 'usri yusra
إِنَّ مَعَ ٱلْعُسْرِ يُسْرًۭا
Indeed, with hardship [will be] ease.
7. Fa iza faragh ta fansab
فَإِذَا فَرَغْتَ فَٱنصَبْ
So when you have finished [your duties], then stand up [for worship].
8. Wa ilaa rabbika far ghab
وَإِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ فَٱرْغَب
And to your Lord direct [your] longing.
One of the many practices taught by Islam is that its followers should begin their activities in the name of God.
The character of this surah is that of a prayer. The prayer begins with praise of the One to whom our prayer is addressed.
