90. Surah Al-Balad

The City

1. Laaa uqsimu bihaazal balad

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ لَآ أُقْسِمُ بِهَٰذَا ٱلْبَلَدِ

I swear by this city, Makkah -

2. Wa anta hillum bihaazal balad

وَأَنتَ حِلٌّۢ بِهَٰذَا ٱلْبَلَدِ

And you, [O Muhammad], are free of restriction in this city -

3. Wa waalidinw wa maa walad

وَوَالِدٍۢ وَمَا وَلَدَ

And [by] the father and that which was born [of him],

4. Laqad khalaqnal insaana fee kabad

لَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا ٱلْإِنسَٰنَ فِى كَبَدٍ

We have certainly created man into hardship.

5. Ayahsabu al-lai yaqdira 'alaihi ahad

أَيَحْسَبُ أَن لَّن يَقْدِرَ عَلَيْهِ أَحَدٌۭ

Does he think that never will anyone overcome him?

6. Yaqoolu ahlaktu maalal lubadaa

يَقُولُ أَهْلَكْتُ مَالًۭا لُّبَدًا

He says, "I have spent wealth in abundance."

7. Ayahsabu al lam yarahooo ahad

أَيَحْسَبُ أَن لَّمْ يَرَهُۥٓ أَحَدٌ

Does he think that no one has seen him?

8. Alam naj'al lahoo 'aynayn

أَلَمْ نَجْعَل لَّهُۥ عَيْنَيْنِ

Have We not made for him two eyes?

9. Wa lisaananw wa shafatayn

وَلِسَانًۭا وَشَفَتَيْنِ

And a tongue and two lips?

10. Wa hadaynaahun najdayn

وَهَدَيْنَٰهُ ٱلنَّجْدَيْنِ

And have shown him the two ways?

One of the many practices taught by Islam is that its followers should begin their activities in the name of God.

The character of this surah is that of a prayer. The prayer begins with praise of the One to whom our prayer is addressed.
