1. Wannajmi izaa hawaa
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ وَٱلنَّجْمِ إِذَا هَوَىٰ
By the star when it descends,
The Star
1. Wannajmi izaa hawaa
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ وَٱلنَّجْمِ إِذَا هَوَىٰ
By the star when it descends,
2. Maa dalla saahibukum wa maa ghawaa
مَا ضَلَّ صَاحِبُكُمْ وَمَا غَوَىٰ
Your companion [Muhammad] has not strayed, nor has he erred,
3. Wa maa yyantiqu 'anilhawaaa
وَمَا يَنطِقُ عَنِ ٱلْهَوَىٰٓ
Nor does he speak from [his own] inclination.
4. In huwa illaa Wahyuny yoohaa
إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا وَحْىٌۭ يُوحَىٰ
It is not but a revelation revealed,
5. 'Allamahoo shadeedul quwaa
عَلَّمَهُۥ شَدِيدُ ٱلْقُوَىٰ
Taught to him by one intense in strength -
6. Zoo mirratin fastawaa
ذُو مِرَّةٍۢ فَٱسْتَوَىٰ
One of soundness. And he rose to [his] true form
7. Wa huwa bil ufuqil a'laa
وَهُوَ بِٱلْأُفُقِ ٱلْأَعْلَىٰ
While he was in the higher [part of the] horizon.
8. Summa danaa fatadalla
ثُمَّ دَنَا فَتَدَلَّىٰ
Then he approached and descended
9. Fakaana qaaba qawsaini aw adnaa
فَكَانَ قَابَ قَوْسَيْنِ أَوْ أَدْنَىٰ
And was at a distance of two bow lengths or nearer.
10. Fa awhaaa ilaa 'abdihee maaa awhaa
فَأَوْحَىٰٓ إِلَىٰ عَبْدِهِۦ مَآ أَوْحَىٰ
And he revealed to His Servant what he revealed.
One of the many practices taught by Islam is that its followers should begin their activities in the name of God.
The character of this surah is that of a prayer. The prayer begins with praise of the One to whom our prayer is addressed.
